baroque trumpet
Danny Teong is the first Singaporean to specialise in historical trumpets, and has performed around Europe and Singapore with various musical ensembles like Le Concert des Nations (ES), La Sorpresa (NL), Elbipolis Barockorchester Hamburg (DE), Les Inventions (FR), and Red Dot Baroque (SG). He enjoys presenting the multifaceted nature of the trumpet through his own rhetorical style of playing which emphasizes on the variation of nuances in articulation and sound colour, especially with chamber music ensembles InDigo Baroque and Sua Dolce Maestà, which he co-founded.
Apart from the historical trumpet, Danny is also adept at the modern trumpet. He is currently serving as a trumpeter in the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band.
Danny is starting to be active as an educator, and has given masterclasses in Singapore and Japan on the historical trumpet and its style of playing, several of which were hosted by Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. He also teaches private lessons.
Danny studied historical and modern trumpet performance with Susan Williams and Gertjan Loot respectively in the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, and finished with a Master’s degree (2017, supported by Adriana Jacoba Fonds) in the former and a Bachelor’s degree (2015, supported by National Arts Council of Singapore) in the latter. He also followed lessons with Willem van der Vliet, former principal trumpet of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic. Other teachers Danny has studied with include Arto Hoornweg, Jun Ikebe, and Samuel Hyken.
In the recent years, Danny has also picked up the cornetto (Renaissance brass instrument) and is steadily introducing it into his professional activities.
